Wanted: Web Designer

We are looking for a designer/automation pro who knows this stuff well enough to be on our team a permanent basis: who can consistently create great ways to make the digital editions ever better.

That last sentence is the most important so please re-read it.

We are a magazine publisher (Reader Magazine: SoCal's Leading Advertising Solution) looking to hire someone (like yesterday) who knows HTML 5 (or other leading edge know-how) to build a cross platform digital edition of our magazines for i-Pad, tablets, e-readers and mobile apps. If you can build a cross-platform digital edition without HTML 5, we want to talk.

We are looking for an economical solution but it doesn't have to be the cheapest. We are an established company in southern California with a larger circulation than nearly every newspaper in California. Our current initiative is to develop a cross-platform digital edition immediately.

You can download a PDF of one of our recent magazines by clicking on "downloads" to get an example.

You need to have enough experience with how magazines work and why people read them, e-readers and i-Pad apps to be able to suggest how we can make our digital edition of The Reader Magazine kick ass.

If you're interested in talking more about it, please PM me.

Thanks!

Just a thought:

Make sure you create actual specifications including the software package(s), operating system/server platform, etc. to use so you can compare quotes on an apples-to-apples basis, otherwise you can have sticker shock once you get started or in the middle of the project.

Will you need a helpdesk? If so, that usually requires someone with knowledge of MySQL, PHP and webmaster skills at a minimum. An advantage of a helpdesk is that it will provide you with less labor requirement in the long run when compared to doing business without it. What other bells and whistles do you need? A successful website has visitor interaction, not just static content.

Also, you need to be sure that designer is also a webmaster, not just a designer/programmer, because if they don't know the website administration and security side, you will have to hire a second person if you don't already have that talent in-house.

Make sure that designer /webmaster knows how to upgrade software as new versions are released. That has to be factored into your overall budget as well.

If you know someone who is a webmaster e.g. a personal friend, you may ask them to ask webmaster-type questions of the person you are looking to hire. That way you will really know the extent of their skills and be able to see through the 'spinning' and embellishments of their sales pitch.

Also, make sure they agree that YOU own the copyright(s) and that they will provide you with the login info in case you want to change designer/webmaster at a later date. All must be in writing in the form of a contract.

Of course, there are other considerations.

Good Luck. ;)
