Hey guys.

I'm starting up a Youtube clone video streaming site soon.
Site is a niche site and has definite potential/unique value.

Users will be able to upload and view videos etc. like Vimeo, Youtube and the rest
We want to host the videos ourselves since that will be the essence of the site and we don't want to be dependent on an outside source for that (If Youtube decides to close your channel for example, your fucked and the site goes kaput).

So, we're looking for some good hosting ideas. Initially looked into cloud hosting like Amazon S3 but that looks prohibitively expensive when scaling.
Was thinking of getting a dedicated server or 2 with unmetered bandwidth and large HDDs on RAID1 and just adding more servers as the traffic/BW increases. Already have my eyes on a few specific ones, but am still looking for advice on the subject.

Any ideas/recommendations on server setups or datacenters for this kind of thing?

Actually I do have streaming site and videos hosted on my server. It's adult Tube but host for stream is good. If you interested you can inbox me anytime.

Go with 100TB if you have a budget. You will have hard time with finding cheaper alternative that provides true 1Gbps speed.
Talk to them on a chat - they helped me before with setting up server for video hosting website (more than year ago, but I dont think anything changed with them in this field - I dont use them any more, so double check recent reviews first).
Then get a simple script that will grab ~100 or so (depending on popularity of website) most popular videos in last 24 hours and put them in CDN like MaxCDN (one of the cheapest options out there).
This way you will keep viral videos cached on edges of CDN releasing stress from server so you can keep providing pretty good speeds for less popular videos.
You can also keep migrating popular videos to second server, but for starters this wont be your issue imo.
When I was setting my website up this was best/cheapest setup.
Do not save on network and do not go for OVH with this, since how fast video load is majority of the success in this niche.

Thanks for the advise..
I'm currently thinking of either creating my own privare cloud with Openstack or just going directly with a CDN, which will be more expensive but initial costs shouldn't be THAT high.

My advice... hire someone. Judging by your first thread you have no idea what you need in terms of hardware or bandwidth.

Hire someone who has done what you want network and server-wise to guide you in your purchases or leases.

There are lots of good cloud hosting provider but as you said you want to start a video streaming website then I'll recommend you to choose web host server location which is out of DMCA reach....

I would recommend to buy a VPS/ Dedicated server from OVH or somewhere in france or netherlands , They have got a good port and ofc better storage, There are some good companies like 100TB in USA as well but the cost will be little higher, you need good budget (No doubt they are one of best around).

Don't go for shared streaming host , it wouldn't stand there with your website!

Start with SATA HDD, and move to SSD drive as you get more traffic.

VPN is definitely the way to go. We're using a Quad Core machine from hosting365 and while their customer service isn't great, the server does the job fantastically.

VPN is not a kind of hosting service, it's just a Virtual Private Network. Did you mean VPS?

VPS is by far not enough to serve the needs of a Youtube clone site.

OP told he was going to create his own cloud through Openstack, all the rest are useless posts. Please stop suggesting irrelevant things.
