vBulletin Spam

I have been receiving a lot of vBulletin spammers on my forum. These are first time posters that leave links to their spammy sites. Is there a plugin or something that I can install to deal with this problem? (I am running Version 3.0.9) Would updating 3.5 solve this? I have a number of hacks installed and am worried about those breaking if I update...

There are two types, automated bot spammers and manual spammers.

For the bots, of course the most important is to have email verification turned on for new registrations. Also version 3.6.2 has a more enhanced image verification setup.

What I do for manual spammers as well as bots, is I have emailed to me new registration notices. It's pretty easy to spot the spammers/bots most of the time. Just watch the domain they are using in their email addresses. If you see one that looks suspicious, log into your admin and delete it/see if they have posted and determine if they need the boot.

When you catch them, make sure to add the domain they signed up with to your disallowed email under user banning options in admin.
