Just curious what everyone's thoughts on how to offer a domain to a potentially interested buyer?

Basically, i own some domains, and I would like to offer them to parties who might be interested because they own similar properties, or have relevant content on their website.

For example, i own a domain XXXXXgroup.com. I know there is a company called XXXXXgroup, but they only own XXXXXgrp.com.

Whats the best way to offer it to them? Do i need to worry about sending an unsolicited email?

Thoughts?
 


You should be fine, just email them saying
"Hey, I see I have the domain name of your company/site/service/whatever and I don't use it and figured you could get more use out of it, if you are interested send me an offer (or, I want XXXX for it, or just straight out say what you want for it.)".

You could also say that you get people emailing you asking why the site isn't up (thinking it is XXXXXgrp's site wait, this isn't a hardcore porn site with all the XXXXX's is it, haha I kid) also say you get a lot of type in traffic and they might be losing customers because of it.

I don't think I would make it sound like you are trying to get money out of them for the domain (like "hey I've got your domain, I'll put up goatse pictures if you don't buy it.") more or less you don't need it and they would get more use out of it but you want to be compensated to cover your reg fees, hosting fees and your trip to Hawaii, I joke. I think that if you're going to contact them to buy the domain, and they have a trademark to the name, it is possible they can take the domain from you via Search Results - THOMAS (Library of Congress) Anticybersquatting_Consumer_Protection_Act (Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

If you contact them directly to buy the domain it seems you only have it because you're profiting from someone else's trademark. However, if you registered the domain name before they registered their trademark you might have a different case.

I'm not 100% sure but thats my logical take on it.
 
Yeah I'm pretty sure you will have a case and won't have to give up the domain if you registered the domain before they registered their trademark and don't appear to be trying to profit off their trademark (besides the selling of the domain) they'll be less likely to legally do anything.
