Not sure how I feel about this one. Got into a debate about it earlier this week and honestly ended up feeling that my standpoint is a little biased. On the one hand, I find Westboro Baptist and Quran burning type of churches disgusting. There's a fine line between protesting and proselytizing. The Constitution is the Constitution though...

I highly doubt the cops are really taking sides on this one, they just don't want any trouble. The same thing would have occurred no matter who was protesting what and in cities all over the country. Yeah it sucks, but has little to do with Dearborn muslims.

Has EVERYTHING to do with the muslims that live in little iran. The powers that be would rather step on the citizens freedoms, rather than upset some muslims.

We had some white supremist kooks handing out litterature a couple of years ago on a busy local street corner. The police stated that they couldn't do anything about it because of the freaks first admendment rights.

Call it political correctness, white guilt or whatever, it's a progressive thing and it's sickining.

the stupid things we do

Is it right? My opinion of course its not right. Just like building a Muslim center near ground zero. But it is their right. I don't think that burning a book is not a good tribute to the thousands that have died. its not all roses but our constitution is the best thing out there.

anti mormon people show up in the very heart of salt lake city on the day of a big church conference and hand out literature that is not preaching a different religion, but saying how evil the mormons are.

do the mormons get mad? no they just smile and walk on by, no scuffles or fights.

im not from utah but have visited on those big conference days and the anti-mormon people stand on boxes in the middle of the street yelling at the mormons.
Its a free country
speak your mind
just dont grab my girlfriends behind! lol :)

Its pretty sad the reputation that radical muslims have created for themselves.
They are what they are, and violence is definately not of God.

Be interesting to read actual MI laws or cases regarding handing out literature but damn always seeing so many cops (for 3 peaceful distributors...?) always starts to make your blood boil. Especially when they go for cameras. Complete overkill, bullying by numbers it looks like.

I'm sure glad I was able to get the hell out if MI, but I'm not too sure AZ and some of the lunacy that goes on down here is any better. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about the snow.

I support the right to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ (or whatever they call it) through the burning of a Koran, handing out flyers, or offensive and shocking picket signs.

Free speech should cover all forms of speech, especially repugnant speech.

Exactly. Fuck your rights. Let's just not make the cops actually work and protect our most basic rights.

Hopefully the people in here arguing for these people to be able to hand out their information arent the same people who think the mosque in NYC should be moved.

It's perfectly okay to feel that they should be able to hand out their information and feel that the NYC mosque should be moved. However, it's not okay for the government to step on anyones rights regardless of how anyone feels.

Unconstitutional is not the first question.

The first question should be, what did the cops really say? There could have very well been an issue as to whether or not they had the proper permits, but we will never know, because the camera was nowhere near enough to hear the conversation between the cops and the Christians. I don't know Dearborn. Never been there, probably never will find myself there. But most communities of that size have regulations about distributing outside of an event. There wasn't anyone else outside the event...

^ Agreed. This video is only one side of the particular incident.

Things I hate:

  1. Religion
  2. "Free Speech Zones"
  3. Cops who are afraid of cameras

Were the police wrong in telling them to stop? I think so. If they were going about it peacefully, not badgering people and simply trying to hand them a pamphlet, then I don't see anything wrong with that. Were the people handing out pamphlets containing propaganda from a religion they knew those they were targeting had no interest in being douche bags? Yup!

What purpose did it serve? Did they honestly think handing out something with a few passages from that silly bible of theirs was going to make the women tear off their burkas and men shave off their beards and instantly start calling Jesus Christ their savior? Of course not. They were just being dicks.

And the cops were ass holes too, just because I hate restrictions on peaceful freedom of speech/expression.
