I've recently decided to try out affiliate marking with CJ and had a quick question about trademark bidding that I was wondering if someone could help me with.

Say purely for example there is a anti-virus software I want to advertise with adwords that doesn't allow trademark bidding called anti-virus abc does that just mean I can't use the keyword "anti-virus abc"? Can I still advertise it on adwords with keywords like anti-virus or Norton anti-virus and also would I be allowed to use the products website url and name in the headline/description/display url of the ad?

Thanks~

You should be asking the merchant ... we can say whatever and when paytime comes they may disapprove your sales because of it.

What I would do is not bid on the trademarks of the company you are promoting (unless you have permission) but bid on the trademarks of competing companies. You could make a special adgroup for it with an ad that goes "Buying {competing software} ? Try {shit your promoting} instead. You will be pleasantly surprised !"

Check out the terms of the campaign and it should tell you. Some merchants are more strict than others so I would suggest you stay away from trademarks and mis-spellings if you are not sure. The last thing you want is the end of the month to come around and find out you were in violation and not get payed.

Just cloak your link with a Javascript redirect then set geotargeting to not target the location of their corporate offices & away you go ;)
Um... Not gonna cut it with many merchants. There are services that monitor trademark bidding, and it's pretty easy to change geo-location with google. I've caught a few affiliates trying to get by with this stuff (note that marketing offices aren't always in-house, in the same state), and yanked back significant commissions after letting it go on for a few weeks.

It's extremely easy for merchants to create scripts that pull ad results at different times from different geo locations.
