I've been thinking about using misspelled domains as ways to generate arbitrage traffic instead of paying out the ass to ineffective 2nd/3rd tier search engines.

I've tried using the Overture tool to just search for the keywords including the .com extension, but that doesn't seem to offer much help, especially since it can recognize misspellings and correct them :p

Is there any good way to figure out how much traffic a misspelled domain name might receive, or even a direct domain name (like the user types in freeporn.com in the address bar)?

Yeah, I thought it would be pretty great, and I have a domain in mind already. The problem is I do not have any resources to determine if the domain in question will actually generate some pageviews. Any ideas?

1. overture + wordtracker

2. google - see how many searches

3. how popular is the term?

4. most important: how popular is the domain name without typo-
if the domain name without typo isn't getting much traffic, yours won't get anything too..

example - I got a typod domain name: blogspoth.com
since a lot of people used to type in blogspot.com, obviously some of them mistakenly add a "h" at the end.. the site used to receive few visitors every day, but I haven't done much with it lately..

Overture shows typo searches without correcting them.

Your example, freeporn.com, has an ovt w/ext of 28026. That's an indicator of traffic. So you would go and find typos for that: freepron.com, freporn.com, etc.

The longer the keywords the more typo variations you can have, so be prepared to lose money.

You may find the domain research tool useful (disclosure: I'm an affiliate).

It will gives you the Ov search count for misspelled domains, Alexa rank (if there was an existing domain in the domains history), # of incoming links, and a domain misspelling generator.

Keep in mind that many typo domains are taken by specialized companies (look at this article). Chances are that you'll have hard time in finding profitable and trademark-free ones.

I already have DRT, great tool. Thanks though. :)
