TLD question for eBay site

If I'm making a site selling eBay.UK items, is my site more credible with a .UK domain? Or is .com always best?

With .au and .ca , my understanding is that I wouldn't be able to get those anyway, correct? (I live in the US and would also be creating sites for ebay.au and ebay.ca)

Honestly, either one will work. If you are only targeting uk customer's then .co.uk and .uk would be the best option in my choice. If your target audience is everyone, then .com would be better
 
By creating listings in eBay.com you will be able to choose what countries your items will be able to go to.
Your items will automatically port over to the foreign eBay domains. Some countries require different ID Verifys which is probably where you will find the biggest hang up.
 
Thanks Tony, but I think I misstated my question. I'm not actually selling on eBay. I'm just making an affiliate site (just think any generic UK-based company affiliate site).

Since I'm only interested in selling to folks in the UK, would my site have more credibility as a .com or as a co.uk
 
My personal experience is that if you have a .co.uk you will get better placement within google.co.uk. Why do I say that? I do business with one website run on a .co.uk and for a key search term we get far better ranking in google.co.uk than for google.com. Also keep in mind that for people in the uk they can check in google.co.uk "only show me pages from uk" in which case your .co.uk will definitely fair better. Also last point....in a global survey (forget where I read it) brits expressed some nationalism about their affinity for their home domains. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, .co.uk is second only to .com and .de with regard to TLD domains - i.e. it also gets type-in traffic. As an American who lived and went to school in the UK, I know for a fact that the Brits like their .co.uk's. Check around the forum you can get some cheap .co.uk domains from UK2net (I think LazyHippy has some coupon codes). You can also check around Acorn Domains website forum for info on .co.uk domains.

one thing you might be interested in - I have a domain with the word 'ebay' in it once. I remember some asshat on a forum saying 'oooh you should be careful... ebay will sue you for using their name'. I said (obviously) GFYA, and lo and behold, a day later, the contact form on the domain fires me thru a very real looking cease & desist from 'Legal Counsel for Ebay Inc'. Only problem - I capture sender's IPs on my contacts, so unless ebay legal is located in russia, I ignored it.

by the time I finally let the domain lapse 2 years later, how many times had ebay tried to sue me?

They prob won't sue you, but might kick you from the aff. prog if you are using it for that - and if they are feeling particularly cuntish try to reclaim any earnings.

eBay/CJ can be very shitty with violations of the affiliate terms.
 
thanks for the advice all ... I've registered the co.uk version of the .com that I already had.
