are the sites you use just on a WPMU platform as subdomains of a main domain or do you physically use tons of domains?

will both have the same affect? Granted you cannot do different class C ips with a WPMU setup.

Just trying to figure this out for myself and would love to conjure up a possible discussion on it...

"Tons of domains" and "subdomains" have different purpose and you have partly answered yourself.

Tons of domains should be what you should go for.
Sub-domains have different purpose, and you can use it, but remember that domain cost is only a very minute % of the cost of owning a network, if cost-savings is what you are planning to achieve by using sub-domains.

Also don't worry too much about the PR unless you are going to sell blog posts to n00bs.
Worry about getting good Unique content in a cost effective manner.

Good luck. You are in the right direction.

All different domains which you need to get the full benefit.

Then have them on different class C IP's with separate nameservers as well.

In terms of content I do it the hard way... my guys write 100% original content but based around the theme of the domain prior to when I bought it. So if any linking site flicks over to the site at first glance it looks as though it is the original site.
