they may take our lives, but they'll never take our TLD!

Scotland is getting it's own TLD .scot this summer.

As some may be aware I'm starting a digital agency this year (SEO/PPC/ORM/IM for local clients)

I believe this will be my opportunity to capture some of the local market. I'm in Scotland and am trying to come up with ways to capture businesses that would like to register the .scot TLD for their business.

This would be my foot in the door for my agency services, offering .scot registration and domain mapping/email forwards.

Any suggestions for maximum exposure without breaking the bank.

Looks like you can pre-register for free.

Pre-reg 100-500 or so (not sure if this is possible or legal, just an idea). When they become available to register, depending on the price - call the businesses up and say "I went ahead and secured "yourbusiness.scot" - I wanted to make sure that domain squatters didn't come in and buy up the business names in our city and then charge a fortune for them. I'll transfer ownership over to you for the reg fee (or free if you can afford to). If you'd like it I just need to talk to the owner and get some information to do the transfer - if not it's no big deal, I'll just hold on to it."

Seems like a cheap and non-intrusive way to get in front of a decision maker. I'm not sure what the demand will be for them though, or if you can pre-reg them in bulk. But if it's possible, you'll come across as doing them a favor.

Also bidding on really specific keywords on adwords like "how to order/register/buy .scot business domain" etc could generate some really targeted leads. Especially if you target locally and really narrow down the keywords/demographics.

FTW thanks :) great advice however I guess domain squatting could be an issue?

Send press releases to local news agencies/business publications about what this means for Scotland and how scottish can utilize it.

Don't forget a.scot Great for a Scottish mens neckwear & fashion site.

I feel like you'd likely need more services on that to snag clients, like website creation etc.

What city are you in?

Just like all the other pointless country gTLDs, I dont think .scot will go anywhere. People in the US dont even use .us.

Stupid TLDs like this are mainly used by government agencies and big businesses who just want to reg it to protect their brand/trademarks. Its a money grab for ICANN.

This. A lot of this.

You think? I'm up north in Aberdeen - there are a couple of guys doing SEO specifically. I'd be offering more than just that - however you have made me think that the website would be the foot in the door for potential clients.

(O_o) - your probably right but would make good link bait "Protect your business, pre-register your .scot domain today"
