Picking a restaurant for dinner tonight, I stopped by redlobster.com -- the site sold me right away, no more looking around.

I think it's the perfect blend of focus, message, and design.

Can anyone point out better sites?

The Flash with the lobster tail is pretty cool. I like the smoke and fire. But the window is too small on a 22". Obviously they are going for 1024 wide monitor peeps.

Considering about 50% of web viewers (as of Decemeber but dropping fast) are on 1024 resolution I don't know who else you would target a website for. You can design up to about 960px wide, which is generally the agreed upon standard these days, and is the size of almost all mainstream media sites, give or take a few pixels.

That being said, the Red Lobster site is only 850px wide... so they are neither designing for the 1024 crowd nor the 800x600 crowd, but instead lost somewhere in between, which is kind of fucked up.

The steaming crayfish tail (that's no lobster) they've got pictured there is cool, but overall I think that while it's a decent site, it's a pretty average decent site. It doesn't make me go "holy shit that's an amazing site!".

I posted a pretty extensive list of awards sites and site galleries previously here:

Wow dude you are kinda picky huh. I am saying it looks like shit and they are assuming (probably correctly) that there viewers are mostly 1024. I think narrow websites that are fixed look like crap. Fluid woulda been nice considering how much effort went into that site.

And that graphic says: "It's time for Lobsterfest" I really doubt it is a crawdaddy. Just a small lobster.

You should have expected him to be a bit picky (at least).
He is a designer himself, after all.

Either way, the website is pretty decent, especially that cool Chef's Kitchen part of it.

The best sites you've seen

You made some insightful points about the design. Much of which I will take to heart for my future sites. However, most of the sites from your links are missing something... They don't deliver their messages in a powerful way. They don't have a call to action.

The red lobster site delivers the blend of design, function, and message.

Your links have a lot of sites -- show me just one you think has the total package.

BTW - what software do you use to make flash sites?

Wow, that site makes me so damn hungry for seafood. Too bad my wife cooks like shit and it's too cold to fire up the grill.

This town runs Red Lobster commercials all the time. We don't have one. Instead we have Applebees, Denny's, Perkins, Ihop, Red Robin, Fuddruckers, and yay, just got a Hooters. Also about 12 other restaurants with the same exact crap on the menu.

IT'S ALL THE SAME DAMN FOOD!!! DAMN THIS TOWN TO HELL!!
