There are some people here that find some damn cool programs from time to time so I figured I'd ask.

I've used Outlook and Thunderbird. Neither one of them are what I call "great."

I'd like to know if anyone knows of any alternatives out there. Free or paid - doesn't matter.

I need something that lets me send and receive email from dozens of accounts, each one with it's own signature. An integrated robust and intuitive calendar function would be awesome as well.

Windows Mail on Vista. I've set up all my email accounts on there, you get all messages from different accounts on the same screen. Easy to select which email you want to email from. Does the job, great app.

mutt is great if you're a total unix nerd but it's kind of shit for anyone else especially for rich email or any multimedia content. I used it for a handful of years about a decade ago but didn't have the endurance for it (or Linux on the desktop in general).

I'll ditto the Mail.app recommendation. I know you're not on a Mac, but it's quite simple to use and meets your requirements. Throw in strong calendaring, address book, and mobile integration, and it's a pretty good deal at $0. (assuming the Mac itself is a sunk cost)

Try as I might, I could not come up with a better term than "endurance" to describe what it takes to switch from Windows to Linux and maintain any semblance of productivity. So I'm in the same boat as you. Linux just isn't an option. For me, trying to get work done using Linux is akin to attempting to haul a 20 foot boat with a Miata.

But thanks for the recommendation anyway, Wicked Ice.

Yeah, I know that Macs have their strong points. I just have to make a decision as to whether I will actually USE one if I get it. Knowing me and my set ways, there is a very real chance that I will end up setting it on a table and doing nothing more than giving it a strong look from across the room.

For now, I guess I will continue plunking along with Thunderbird. Anyone know of any "must have" extensions for Thunderbird that will make using it a little less clunky and painful?

windows live mail. It allows you to consolidate all mail account hotmail, gmail, pop account whatever.

It's pretty good... one general inbox and it seperates it once you've looked at it.

My vote goes to Outlook 2007 too. I have used it for months and it's the best client I've used (and I've tried many). I have over 20 accounts set up, each with custom sigs, templates, filtered into their own subfolders, etc. etc. Works great.

And btw, there is actually quite a difference between Outlook 2007 and the old Outlook.

I went from outlook express to thunderbird to finally gmail.

For me gmail is the absolute winner hands down. I can manage all my accounts in one account... searching is easy, not like in thunderbird where you can only search per folder. And Important messages can be marked with a star which are then easily accessible in the star folder all in one place. And not to mention... no dependency on a locally installed email client.
