Telemarketing/Outbound Cold Calling

Hey guys, what's up? Just had a couple questions.

Recently, I've been considering dropping my outsourced call center and replacing it with an in-house one. Now mainly I use the call center for lead generation and outbound calls.

My biggest question is: How do the telemarketers pick which numbers to call for lead generation? Where do they get their lists (if they even have lists)? Do they just randomly select numbers and cold call?

Just wondering, as I'm pretty clueless about running something like this myself. Thanks! :)

Generate your own leads online or offline, or purchase them from a lead generator. I assume you know about the DNC list. There are tons of players depending on the industry, so it varies widely on who to get your leads from if you're not doing it yourself. LinkedIn has some good groups on this kind of thing.

I owned a mortgage for a while, I dealt with telemarketers. What a pain in the ass. the leads were high quality but just a pain in the ass managing them.

as far as getting lists it depends what you're calling.

what's the problem with your outsourced telemarketing center?

You need to do a lot more research first. On the business side, you need to register a SANS number (for DNC), find a good way of getting data, a good telco provider, etc. The rules for telemarketing considering how long it's been going on are pretty cut and dry and if you violate and get caught, it's a quick way to wind up in a ton of trouble. Then on top of that, if you've got your own program, great, if not, you need to find or build one, and that's a lot of work just by itself.

Then in terms of the call center itself you need space (that allows call centers, a lot of landlords hate it), you need internet/data/phone service, you need cubicles, a phone system, some sort dialer, etc. When it comes down to it, building a call center is a ton of work and a lot of money, even if it's only say 20 seats. If you really do actually have a telemarketing campaign that is doing well outsourced I'd suggest you leave it where it's at.

I'm essentially just looking to cut costs and I was thinking I'd be able to pull in more leads if I was running shit myself. I'm reconsidering after what you guys have said :P

Which call centers do you guys use? Cutting costs is my main issue.

@McConnell - I've managed a small telemarketing team before. It's a LOT more work than you imagine it will be.

You either have to pay well for great salespeople, or you have to deal with churning through them regularly. You also know how to manage telemarketers. If you don't have much people/team management experience, this isn't a good place to start.

Add on to that all the costs with rent, phones, data, etc and it becomes a real headache.

Depending on what volume you are doing, you might be better off spending some time finding a few really good work-from-home freelancers and switching to those. There are quite a few moms who were successful full-time salespeople before having kids who go back to freelance TM as a part time thing. They are often better (and more diligent) than most full time employees you'd get.

Get yourself something like SugarCRM or SalesForce set up on a central server to manage the calling.

That's what I do now and it's cheaper than using outsource, with better results. Takes a bit of time and you still have to manage them a little, but nowhere near as much as staff. You can fire them very quickly if they suck too.

LI would be the place to start recruiting freelancers.

just diy, pick up the phone and call. i call my leads so much it makes some of them puke, but it also maximizes the $$. i'm not even that good on the phone either, i'll admit. i also pass the leads for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time around to a local lady, who is a shark on the phone.. need to always maximize the dollars from partials.

let me know if you need help with telemarketing, there's great videos from jordan belfort on the vault called the straight line system.

That's the system we used on wall st. it's very effective.

I would try to get my hands on those videos if I was doing any type of telemarketing.

jordan belfort is responsible for producing some of the best telephone salesmen in history, guys that would get clients to invest millions every month form a no name firm into no name stocks using the power of persuasion. Too bad this guy was a criminal, he could have made a billion with his talent.

Just don't... don't take it in-house... you really don't want to manage telemarketers lol... Did it for too long... you don't want to be there.

Cheers!
