I don't mind a bit of TF2 now and then for some mindless distraction, but making it free will just mean they flood it with noob kids that are to cheap/broke to buy it, and the game play will go to shit.
Must mean they are getting ready to announce/release TF3 and want to increase the player base.

Doesn't TF2 have some extra content that is purchasable? My bet is that steam is just trying out this business model to see how well it scales and what type of revenue per user they can expect and whether they end up ahead or behind compared to regular sales.

Brings back memories to playing good ol' Team Fortress (1) about 11 years ago. The first game where I got really addicted to multiplayer warfare. Then a few years later, Battlefield 1942 came out and I was hooked...
