Subdomain or Subfolder?

For a website with general domain - "hostingthatsucks.com" - should I use subdomains or subfolders to rank for specific keywords?

"hostgator.hostingthatsucks.com" or "hostingthatsucks.com/hostgator"?

Subdomains are treated as different sites than the home directory, i.e.:

http://weight-loss.buttes.org is considered to be a separate site, whereas

http://buttes.org/weight-loss is actually part of "buttes.org"

I researched this for awhile when I was trying to decide where to host a blog for one of my sites. I ended up going with the subfolder because it was easier to manage.
