Subdomain+Blog Vs. Domain+blog: Can just using sub domains Earn you the same amount

G'day guys

I am curious to see what people think. Starting out as a noob, would it be best to play around with sub domains before actually investing time and money into real domains? I have seen a few subdomains with higher PR than the actually domain but is it worth the loss of what you are allowed to do?

Honestly I think I am going to start out with sub domains and blogs just to wet my feet but that leaves a lot of things I am unable to do and a lot of techniques such as squeeze pages unavailable to me.
