Hey guys..

There are millions of movie sites that let you watch movies online for free. Can you quickly and easily take an online movie and stream it to your TV?

In the past I have had to plug an HDMI cord from my laptop to my TV and then find speakers to have sound.. Not ideal if you want to use your laptop and watch the movies!

Will APPLE TV work for this? Or does it prevent streaming just any online video? How is everybody else doing this?

I don't like downloading movies... pain in the ass :(

Apple TV will not work to stream from random websites. I use a jailbroken Apple TV with XBMC on it to locally stream things that I have downloaded to a shared drive on my network.

The Boxee Box might do what you want.

Nice, thanks bro. The Boxee Box seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Anybody have it? Experiences?

Boxee Box is nice.

It does everything I want, and in the past few months since the new update is has been very stable and nice. I wouldn't change now, 6 months ago it was very buggy and always freezing

WDTV Live here. You can either hook up hard drives with USB or connect it to your router via LAN, in which case you get access to all shared drives in your network.

You can also browse Youtube with it, it's built in. And if I'm not mistaken, there are also plugins around that let you surf the web, including streaming sites.

My Samsung 64" SMART TV has wifi and taps into my network automatically, so whatever computer I have on in the network and my NAS drive are accessible directly through the TV itself. I also have an appleTV which I have sharing turned on, so stream from my iTunes. I can also mirror my iPhone and iPad with AppleTV so whatever I have on my iPhone/Pad, I can have it show up on the TV, which is nice because the remote with the samsung is clumsy to work with, entering text is a pain in the ass, so if I want to browse the web on the TV, or run You Tube, or any app, it's much easier.
TV technology has really come along way in the last couple of years, as far as sharing and streaming.

I got the Boxee Box and I'm trying to use the UPNP but it can't locate my Macbook.

Any ideas?

So like if you play a song on your iPhone it'll play on your TV? Does this setup work with a hometheatre receiver so you won't need to power on the TV itself?

+REP bro
I have the WDlive and its mediocre at best with what they allow you to do with it. just went and put the WDLXTV firmware (here is the WIKI)on it and it even has plugins for youporn, youjizz and a torrent client. This is exactly what I have been wanting just never bothered to look into it. Now this thing rocks

I'm using the xtreamer Ultra - which will also run the boxee software on it. I like the xtreamer, because it has a forum full of xtreamer hackers that make their own apps for the xtreamer, and xtreamer actually encourages it.

Xtreamer Ultra Announcement!

yep, I can play the song and have it play via my tv. I haven't tried it without the TV, but the AppleTV device has it's own optical audio out to the receiver, so it might work. I'll have to check it out and try it.

the Samsung SMART TV has a TON of it's own apps as well, kind of like your iPhone or iPad has it's own apps. You can download them and run them through your TV.
It's a blend of TV/Internet/Phone. It's not perfect. Like I said, the remote is a little clumsy (there's one with a keyboard on it for an extra hundered, but even that is not as intuitive or easy to use as it should be yet. There's an app for the iPhone/iPad that turns the phone/pad into the remote for the TV too. Works pretty much just like the remote itself. You just tap the screen instead of your remote. Kind of redundant if you have the remote, but if you lose your remote, you can always download it onto your phone or tablet.
It's got 3D too, which I got mostly for the kids, but the 3D is actually pretty damn good. better than I expected it to be. I've downloaded a bunch of 3D movies and loaded them into iTunes and stream them, and they look awesome

@ Netphase, SMB works great for file sharing. But I want to be able to go to a movie website on my laptop, play the video on my laptop and then transfer it to my TV screen for ultimate convenience.

Any idea how to do that? UPnP is not finding my laptop..

Seems cheap, but has decent reviews and is USB powered.

Maybe look into this: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Lake-Converter-compatible-Windows-S-Video/dp/B00351VWKI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1331967572&sr=8-4"]Amazon.com: Lake PC to TV Converter Box compatible with Windows and Mac (VGA To RCA / VGA To S-Video): Electronics[/ame]

Seems like a pretty cheap and doable solution for both the video and sound.
