Was just wondering if you steal Google images or other website images will it hurt your rankings on Google? Even with the name changed.

I'd check the copyright of the image before re-publishing it. If you want to be sure - use advanced search and select the different licence model you require.

Beware of Getty. Use Tin Eye to check the image is not a Getty image.
I've seen caught out twice before. Lesson learned!!!! Extortion letters and that which follows are not fun.

If won't hurt your rankings, it will hurt your bank account. Badly. I know.

It won't hurt your rankings. Just don't be startled if they tell you to take it down from your site. Use sites like flickr and do an advanced search with images that have a Creative Commons license. That's the "safest" way to go. Mind you, I have never had any problems with using images from Google Images.

I'll just add - I find the quickest way to check these thing is a reverse image lookup in both Tineye & Google image search (click the icon on the right inside the search bar in G images), between the two you'll quickly see who owns the rights.
You can also use it to check your competition's legal stance, if you get my drift.

I don't think rankings will be hurt, but the hassle from copyright owners is never fun. Sometimes people get away with it, other times they will be in for a heart attack because they received a letter from a lawyer.

What if you take a picture found on google images which has no clear copyright showing and you take parts of that picture and combine it with others you've found?

Surely that's just as problematic? (if they find it)

There's a surprisingly easy method to cover your ass if you ever catch heat from lawyers in a situation like this...if you get a notice of copyright infringement or cease and desist letter. Its worked really well for me in the past.

what's the method?

Stealing images can't hurt serps because I have never experienced but let me tell you one thing which is really true that is Google def. banned your Google adsense account.

Last Month I have suggested one of my friend to apply for adsense and implement on the blog. The blog is about Hollywood Gossips! He applied and his application rejected, Reason was copyrighted Images. even all Images he used on his blog have 00 watermarks + already Renamed+hosted on his own hosting. Still Google didn't approve the account. I don't know how google traced it out. Even I personally checked & all clear.
So I must say it will be harmful for your Adsense atleast.

I think you will only have a problem on copyrights thingy. I just have a personal blog and I just grabbed a picture of a certain magazine and the next thing I know they sent me a letter saying to take it down or else they will forward it to their lawyer!

Even i was wondering about this, but sometime back I loaded some images in my blog which were taken from google. Later I received a mail from the person who had copyrights of that image and I was told to remove that image from my blog. Without thinking much i removed that image from my blog. So be careful guys

It doesn't call stilling, it called sharing. )
No you want be hurt, never the less if you don't want Google to see it do few steps:
1. Change the name
2. Change the size
3. Flip it horizontally in PS. This step will make it not recognizable.
