Social Engines...



Niche social sites can be very profitable but are a shit ton of work to develop. You will need to spend time on the major non-niche social sites as well as forums, groups, mailing lists etc. devoted to your chosen niche.

I used to recommend going for paid solutions like SocialEngine but with changes that Ning made to their platform that allow you to include your own ads I say set up a free site with them, see if you can build traffic, then upgrade it to its own domain name, removing their ads etc. It's an easy way to scale a site with virtually zero out of pocket expense on your part (at least, zero out of pocket on dev.)
