I'm in the market for a new dedicated server, and while shopping around I noticed that servers come quite a bit cheaper without control panels.

I'm no linux wiz by any means, so how hard would it be for a noobie to get a hang of creating new accounts, domains, etc without the help of a CP? Would it be worth the extra $30/mo to get a good CP?

Thanks

yeah, $30 would be worth it
it's a lot to learn if you're starting from zero
linux, meaning SSH, takes some time to learn.. so how expensive is your time?

Shop around - there are some server companies that include a control panel free of charge. Usually Interworx or Directadmin.

There is a free CP - Webmin - but its a bit..awkward to learn.
Whats your budget and what are you looking to get for it? I can probably find you a few options.

You can't 'create accounts' if there's no cpanel I'm affraid.. You'd have to learn SSH fluently. It's well worth the $30/mo - if you're inexperienced you'll end up just breaking the server without a CP..

I think panel less is cheaper but I would not know where to start if there were no panels. Yes they take up memory and cost more money but for someone who is tech savvy, it's pretty tough to maintain the server withour panel help. Even simple things like creating domains & emails can be tough (at least for me). Unless you can outsource that portion of it?

For sure worth the money for the control panel.

Keep a close eye on the layered tech announcements forums ( Announcements - Layered Tech Support Forums & Knowledge Base ) if you are looking for a good deal. You can find some crazy bargains, especially if you are a first time customer of theirs. I have been with them for awhile with no problems.

I'm not a big fan of plesk, I would be fucked without whm! Haha

I'm an expert Unix sysadmin and I still find value in the commercial control panels. They automate what would take countless hours of initial setup and maintenance... even for the expert admin. It's well worth the $30/mo.

I do not beleive in control panels which are available for free. If you are looking for dedicated server its better to go its better go for good CP which will cost you almost $30. It will be better for you.
