PAD files and SEO. I used to develop, and still get sales almost daily from one program that I haven't hardly touched in years. The reason being - I'm ranked #1 for all my target keywords and have been for a very long time. With Google updates it may be harder these days but I gained most my ranking by blog commenting on tech blogs. The PAD files help for sure though and you can use software to submit your app to thousands of shareware sites easily. Although I wonder if Google's algorithm changes may have weakened that too -- all those new backlinks at once.
Also, most shareware sites automatically give you a "Rated 5 Stars" badge for your site, instantly & automatically. It's lame, but use them. Most people won't know that they're bs as long as you pick just a few of the best looking ones and don't put 100 different badges on your site.
