While flipping though the channels the other day trying to find Sci-Fi on my new cable I noticed they have re-branded them selves as "SyFy". A couple of months back they mentioned a new sci-fi was coming but this is just retarded. The new theme of the channel is imagination rather than science fiction.

Scifi.com now redirects to SyFy.com also. Got to be one of the dumbest moves in this channels history.

Well, I'm a nerd, and I like Science Fiction, but I never really watch SciFi/SyFy. There are many potential products that could actually be pitched through commercials, mainly comic book stuff, or they could just show g4 commercials the whole time.

I was appalled as well. I mean I'm not much of sci-fi channel fan (unless they're showing real scifi movies and not the B movie crap either) but as a marketer, I was appalled. You don't go and change a successful brand name like that. The only thing I could think of was that they had to change for some legal reason? But what I don't know.

They probably just plan on getting further away from sci-fi programming. Or at least want a brand that appeals to more than just nerds from the A/V club.

Remember when spikeTV was rebranded from, fuck, what did it used to be?

LOL. Just googled it, spikeTV used to be the fucking nashville network.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_(TV_channel)

It used to be the hillbilly channel, now it's mostly the 'half naked men pounding the shit out of each other' channel.

I remember SciFi.com was the first page I visited on the Interwebs. Time has flown.

I still watch TNG on "SyFy" but that's about it. Seems really stupid to forward a real-word domain to a made-up one.

They were kind of the last cable station that didn't go the HGTV route and revamp with tv-personalities, reality shows, etc. That's probably where this is heading since the model has been proven by FoodNetwork, Discovery Channel, Spike, et al.

Fear Factor... IN SPACE! Anyone?

Reminds me of what happened with TLC.

Oh man I was so pissed when The Learning Channel became TLC.

On the matter of the SciFi channel I am a big fan and its one of the few channels that were always in my favorites. I watched SG-1, SG Atlantis, Ghost Hunters, Farscape, and Eurkea when they were/are on. The channel used to be much much better many years back and then as I recall they got a new women CEO.

Thats when it all started to go down hill, that was the first time when they left the normal outerlimits, startrek, kinda stuff and started to make their own B movies and had a few horrible reality shows. One of them had this stupid ass house that they moved "normal" people into that had a witch, a vampire and some other cast of idioits to try and scare the contestants to move out. Since then they have had like 4-5 other reality tv shows. Others include Stan Lee's Who Wants to be a Superhero, and Cha$e to name a few I can't recall the names of the others they were so bad.

Since this is really the ONLY channel on tv that shows science fiction and nerdy stuff it seems so stupid for them to try and leave that niche. If they are trying to argue that nerds don't have enough money they are horribly mistaken.

To me, Sci-Fi = Science Fiction. SyFy ~= Sify = Indian Web Portal.

The reason behind the name change was basically that they couldn't properly brand/trademark Sci-Fi, a generic phrase, so they needed the name SyFy to do so. Odd decision for sure, but other name rebrands haven't killed companies.
