Got an e-mail from HostGator - apparently my site was a high load on the share servers so now they're saying I have to move to dedicated and thats 17x expensive and I can't really afford them.
I don't see how I am using too much "load" - i only get a few hundred uniques a day and I don't host any big files.

no idea what that means :P
but i probly got a lot of PHP/MySQL scripts on there that I don't need - i asked support if i can delete a ton of crap and go back to my normal hostin'

yeah I was asking if you have a lot of php scripts on your site
they're probably the reason your host is upset, those scripts need to compile each time a page loads so it uses up their CPU

Just waiting for a response from hostgator now - hopefully i can get everything back to normal if i just delete some crap.

The exact same thing happened to me, Dave. First I switched to their semi dedicated for $75.00 per month, and then to their Dedicated Pro for $375 per month. Does anyone know of a host that allows high CPU usage, or a host that offers something similar to the Dedicated Pro package? (see http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml)

I really need something that offers the same specs for $100 or less per month. Please help me out.

I use theplanet.com for this site and site5.com for my blog.. I had one of my larger sites on Site5.com and it was pretty damn stable.

I recommend liquidweb.com. Fully managed dedicated server.

But if you can manage it yourself, either try layeredtech.com or softlayer.com

/me pelts Indy with vegetables

Go with site5, I use them for tons of projects now and they are by far the best host I've ever used.

(p.s. I cancelled my servage account months ago and they billed my credit credit card yesterday for another 3 months of hosting, and their staff won't reply to my emails now)

Wordpress is tough on CPU usage, so if you're using that make sure you use the wp-cache plugin.

800Hosting.com has been good to me and very stable for my dedi. You may be able to cut costs by getting an unmanaged server loaded with plesk or cpanel. (You can do just about everything from there without having to know shell commands or anything)

You may want to even go with an unmanaged dedi. I've found that you may not need support for 6 months at a time so why pay the extra 100-200 a month? If I need something, I can have it outsourced for way cheaper.

turns out the RSS Site i'd won from Jon was causing the issues, using 64.7% of the CPU power xD
i deleted it and it's all back to normal :)

Also Jon, what kind of servers do you have in order to run 1000's of these? Dave's hostgator package couldn't even handle one....

it was probly cos of the 25-minute updating.
1-2 day updatings woulda been better, but i'm over scraper sites :)
