After hearing one of the wicked domainers (Lord Brar) mention in a podcast interview the going prices for 3 char domains, I thought I'd see if any stray overlooked ones could be had cheap.
I did an exhustive search of the 48,025 or so legal 3 char names and found indeed, None available for .com or .net, there were a couple of false starts that had just been renewed that day. I was excited for a moment finding an available 2 char name (y4.com) only to learn that all the 2 char .com names are being "retired" as they become available, it would be interesting to hear from the pros what ICANN's thinking is.
I have found there to be 226 3-char .org names available, as well as an estimated 17,000 each for .biz and .us available. Of course all the dictionary words and all numericals appear to be gone. a 3 char .us name would be cool for twitter posts, if you don't mind your naked whois hanging out.

The value of three character domains (x4y.com) is much much less than three letter domains like xyz.com -- epecially in .org / .net arena. I still get offers from people to sell me their 3-char .net / .orgs for low xx.

There was a site appraiser who valued .com x5 to x10 the value of other TLDs. I remind people that if you just type Sears into firefox it knows to go to sears.com not the family site sears.net, reviewing some 3000 sample .biz finds None of them were all alpha. I always look for names that work in song lyrics, like TD3.
If one is looking to match existing domains to potential users, or needs to check if a new company name abbreviation isi alerady used for a VD cure, wikipedia has a comprehensive table of Three Letter Abbreviations you can identify at a glance the 70% in red that have no commonly recognized use.
