Move Over Radar Gun, Here Comes A New Revenue Collector: The Text Message Detector Gun | The Free Thought Project

Who's ready to create a device/app to block this piece of shit from working?

A Virginia company, ComSonics, is working on development of a device that detects radio frequencies that come from a cell phone inside of a car, according to the Virginia-Pilot.

Text messages emit unique frequencies that differ from the radio waves emitted by other activities on a phone. This new device would allow officers to determine if someone were texting from inside the vehicle.

Texting while driving is outlawed in 44 states so this radar gun like device would be a welcome addition to many law enforcement agencies around the country.

Time to invest in ComSonics. They're probably getting paid 100 times the market value of their product. Plus, if they know what they're doing, they'll sign up every law enforcement agency to a continuity program for never-ending software updates that lock 'em into their platform.

In time, they'll be able to hire lobbyists to convince the remaining states to outlaw texting while driving.

If your in a van to the airport and 6 people are texting is that a problem?

Totally agree with Fatbat. Anyone who texts and drives should be killed swiftly and preferably painfully. It's worthy of a Darwin Award if they themselves died in an accident, but if they kill some innocent person then they are lower than the lowest of the low. Keep your eyes on the fucking road you morons.

At the same time it is totally acceptable for a passenger to text in a moving vehicle, so this radar idea is retarded.

Nearly had someone smash into my car because they were crossing lane lines due to texting while we were both going ~80mph the other day. Fuck people who text while driving.

Officers are constantly looking for any excuse to make contact with individuals in an attempt question people as a means of starting a criminal investigation. They want to search people’s cars and will use any excuse possible to get their proverbial foot in the door.

so true

I assume they would fine only if single driver is in the car, otherwise passenger issue.

This sounds pretty serious. Hopefully they enforce this law with these bad boys:

Does it differentiate between incoming and outgoing texts? inb4 a $300 ticket because thehobbster sent me a cone pic while I was driving.

There's a lot of vitriol directed at those who text while driving. Is the same level of contempt reserved for the following:

- eating while driving
- yelling at kids in the rear seats while driving
- reading while driving
- applying makeup while driving
- brushing one's hair while driving
- reaching for something on the floorboard while driving
- looking at a hot girl on the sidewalk while driving
- having your dog in your lap while driving
- looking at your teeth in your visor mirror while driving
- adjusting your stereo or air conditioner while driving
- laughing and having a conversation with passengers while driving

Would you criminalize all of the above? Or does texting get your attention simply because it's so prevalent?

Also, should texting drivers be punished even if their actions don't impact anyone - e.g. they text while cruising down a deserted freeway.
