Ah man...
One of the most innovative artists ever.
There was nothing like The Velvet Underground by a long shot when they came out...
Without The Velvet Underground we wouldn't have had the Pixies & Nirvana.

So this is the guy responsible for that horrible band Nirvana?

The Velvet Underground is probably responsible shit load of horrible bands. Rolling Stone has lost their way and turned into the MTV of music magazines, but I would agree with this part.
"cementing the Velvet Underground’s status as the most influential American rock band of all time. "

Rolling Stone - ""Produced" by Warhol and met with total commercial indifference when it was released in early 1967, VU’s debut The Velvet Underground & Nico stands as a landmark on par with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde. Reed's matter-of-fact descriptions of New York’s bohemian demimonde, rife with allusions to drugs and S&M, pushed beyond even the Rolling Stones’ darkest moments, while the heavy doses of distortion and noise for its own sake revolutionized rock guitar. The band’s three subsequent albums – 1968’s even more corrosive sounding White Light/White Heat, 1969’s fragile, folk-toned The Velvet Underground and 1970’s Loaded, which despite being recorded while he was leaving the group, contained two Reed standards, “Rock & Roll” and “Sweet Jane,” were similarly ignored. But they’d be embraced by future generations, cementing the Velvet Underground’s status as the most influential American rock band of all time.

Fucks sake. Wrote a few paragraphs on how & nico was important to my development as a person, you know in an exceptionally cliched sense, but laptop turned off. Probably for the best.

A different point of sadness though is that one of my first concerts was Lou Reed performing Berlin in 2007 (I believe), as a treat for doing well at school. Like most people, it's hard to find common ground with parents or shared interests due to generational gaps so this one Father/Son moment I'll cherish forever. LR is awful live but this tour was exceptional. Proper backing band. Proper stage design and video accompaniment. Songs played like the record but with a more emotionally raw vocal delivery. I honestly don't think I'll go to a better gig again.

His actual body of work isn't that great, and lyrically he was very inconsistent but no one can deny the greatness of the Velvet Underground or that he didn't release at least 5 decent solo albums throughout his career.

RIP Lou.

Will post some favourites tomorrow.

I saw him live two years ago, in the main square of a little town in Italy. It was the night Amy Winehouse died - Lou announced it. I agree with you - he wasn't that great live, a bit of a miserable old bugger, but his band that night were exceptional. And I really enjoyed the evening.

So this is the guy responsible for that horrible band Nirvana?

Like LiamLennon alluded, Lou Reed paved the way for the entire grunge movement. I was watching Pete and Pete yesterday and they had a garage band in the episode and the first thing I thought was "that dude's singing like Lou Reed".

Also, Nirvana was a great fucking band... Load up on guns, bring your friends
