Questions about hosting websites?

Hello,
I'm building a website, and I currently live in the US.
Question is, If I host it on an offshore server (in a different country), and I'm the owner of the website, and something on the site might be illegal in US, can I still be convicted of the crime, even if it's being hosted outside the country? Could they even trace it to me?

It's nothing bad, the site I'm making, It's going to help people, I'm just worried about legal problems and everything.

and if offshore hosting is the best solution, which hosts would you guys recommend?
