I'm looking to buy a domain that's status is "pendingDelete". I've learned that after 5 days in this state, it becomes "available".

My question: when it becomes available, will I be able to buy it from any company, for example; the company I get my hosting from? Or will I have to go through an auction site like namejet.com or something like that?

FYI: The domain is a three-word domain; not top-tier.

Some registrars like Godaddy allow you to backorder domains for when they come available. If noone has done so, you will be able to purchase the domain through any registrar when it becomes available.

When 'available' it can be registered by anyone at any registrar. Quick tip to the OP: never ever register your domains with your hosting company. Go make an account at NameCheap.

Your chances of being able to buy the "pending delete" domain from any registrar vary greatly depending on which registrar the domain is currently with. Most send all domains to an aftermarket service of some sort by default these days, be it NameJet, SnapNames, Afternic, TDNAM, etc. etc. You should first try to identify which after market service the current registrar uses, and if you really want the domain, put in a bid on it with that service.

If you REALLY want the name, and want to cover all your bases, put in a bid on more than one of them for it.

Thanks, Matt. Any specific reason why?

Many reasons. Most importantly though it's because hosts come and go, you'll want to upgrade hosting as your online business expands (shared to VPS to dedi) and you want complete access to your domain (you are very limited to what you can modify about your domain with most hosting companies - you have to email them to do everything else).

Plus hosts (and godaddy) are more likely to suspend or hold your domain name whenever they get a complaint (it's happened to me before) even before verifying the complaint is legit. Namecheap has never done that to me, and since it seems to be one of the top registrars recommended here I doubt it's happened to many members here.

When it will get deleted and it will become available you can register it anywhere you want. However, if some onewill grab it before you (for example by backorder) then you can expect it to be parked and auctioned.

Thanks everyone for the extremely helpful info!

Anyone know if Tucows sends their deleted domains through any of the dropcatchers?
If Tucows doesn't keep it for themselves, they send the rest to NameJet.com .

PendingDelete domains can get grabbed by any registrar when the domain is removed from the registry. .com and .net domain names start dropping at 1 PM CT and continue to drop based on when the domain was registered (time wise) compared to when it was registered with the domains dropping for the day until 2:15 PM CT.

Use a domain registrar with Live Whois (real time) like Moniker.com, Godaddy.com, eNom.com etc.

If the domain has traffic or higher search volume, expect it to get grabbed with a backorder by at least somebody. There is a chance you could hand register it during the time frame I stated above on the 6th day the domain is PD.

UPDATE

Got the domain.

Here's what I did:

1) Waited 6 days after I saw the domain in pendingdelete status.
2) On the 5th day, went to NameJet (as directed by this thread), and saw 0 bids on the domain I wanted.
3) Went to the site I usually get my hosting from on the 6th day and saw the domain available.

Thank you all for the help!
