Now I've asked this question before over at another forum and seems like folks didn't know why. Why is it so important to buy a domain with the exact keyword as the domain? Some IM experts, I won't say names, push this and I don't see what's the big idea; especially, if the keyword is going to be in the url somewhere when you write up keyword focused post titles.

I'm also asking because I've come up with some very creative and memorable domain names and bought some, which now seems like a waste of money.

It just gives you a leg up in SERPS.
Current search engine algorithms give extra weight to exact match domains, so bluewidgets.com will rank better than mycooldomain.com/bluewidgets.php PROVIDED everything else is the same.

There's nothing else to it really. The additional weight can be quite alot, esp. for country level .tld's (my exp. is with .co.uk but i imagine is goes across the board).

They certainly aren't some magic bullet, and are not suitable to all projects, plus if you can buy it for reg fee chances are it will suck for brand-ability.

If you have decent memorable domains, stick with them, it might take a bit more work, but if its a long term project its worth it.

apple.com doesnt sell much fruit.

There is more to it really. Trust. The reason the exact match search term is important for search engine rankings is because there's implicit trust that you earn from the search engine, but the trust factor goes beyond just the search engine. There have been case studies that have shown that having the exact match domain also increases click throughs for ads, which leads to higher quality scores, which leads to lower costs. Other factors affected by trust include things like the ability to get link backs because you are a trusted source with the exact match domain, the conversion ratio of your visitors because they trust you (insurancequotes.com versus insquotes4you.com for example), and the ability to get direct advertisers on your site because they want to be associated with those keywords.

Having the exact match is also incredibly useful for getting type in traffic, which is free money really. It's targeted traffic and it didn't cost you anything.

So it's bigger than just SERPS.

Oh, I see my responding post never made it up the other day. OK. Well, I appreciate the helpful insights the two of you shared. I have another question on the same topic, but goes in a different direction. So, I'll create a new thread.

Utterdomain actually touched base on a lot of good points.

There's another good reason why they have so much positive impact on SEO. When combined with with a CMS like WordPress, you actually get maximum value out of the SEO factor.

The reason for this, is how WP calls for site info. If you take a look at the source code of a WP site with a keyword domain, pay attention to how many times the site name (keyword) is repeated in the <head> section, and then throughout the rest of the site.

Utterdomain brought up an important point.

I always use Escrow.com when selling domains to clients, and no one has ever asked me about it even though the organization behind it is not a big bank or anything and the actual corporate name is something different. Just gives you confidence that it is a legit company.
