Does anyone bother with those PTC sites? I've noticed that a lot go under (or pretend to) after making a bundle but I wonder what happened to the people who paid for their sites to be clicked? Are most PTCs just loaded with sites owned by PTC owner?
When people start different blogs (rehashing same content) to max backlinks do they acknowledge that sites are owned by same person or do they pretend to be completely separate to avoid the dreaded Googlebot?

They couldn't pretend to be completely separate, the people would need to hide their whois and host each website / blog on a server with a different IP, or it'll be obvious to googlebot the sites / blogs are owned by the same person.
As for the question on PTC website, it seems that way. They take money from those wanting to advertise, pass it on to publishers for a bit to get "proof" they payout, then once they have a good amount rolling it, stop paying.
