Are there any problems with hosting multiple domains on one IP address? Specifically if you link between them? Doesn't google realize that they're all on the same IP address and devalue the links between them under the assumption that they may be controlled by the same entity/person and therefore not very "honest" links?

I'm currently hosting with dreamhost and like them a lot but have been thinking of switching to a VPS.

If you interlinked like 250 domains on the ip you would have a problem.

If you interlink 10 domains on the same ip, not likely to be any problem.

Well based on the rules set aside by ARIN (controls IP's) you're suppose to use one IP for name based domains (so ones without SSL). So the one thing about spreading out domains via IP when you're on a VPS is getting the IP's themselves. A lot of hosts will require justification for this sort of thing which may be tough depending on the host. Of course when you just go with a shared host and just get several accounts then they will not care since they spread you across multiple servers. So with just a shared host there is no worry about justifying IP usage.

I guess the annoying thing about these rules is search engines don't like domains on the same IP linking but at a certain point you really should seperate in either multiple hosting accounts or VPS's or whatever your hosting solution is to just not have a single point of failure for all the sites.

i have a dedicated server with 2 IP addresses, my websites are split between the 2 ip's so i guess that it is a not a problem

sure, there is no problem to host multiply web sites on a sigle IP address, you will only need unique Ip address if you are going to install ssl certificate for your on-line store
