Hey when you guys register a new domain do you choose to make the listing private? Seems like a lot of money to waste to me - but is it something I should be getting for my sites?

Thanks!

It all depends. If you want everyone to know who made your site then don't make the domain private.

If you are doing something that is a little shady or can be flooded with hate mail or phone calls then make it private.

Also, just a tip (if you don't know this already), don't ever use your real legal information when registering your domain. And what I mean by that is, if you're not doing it under a business name; then do not do this ...
My Real Name
My Real Address
My Real City, My Real State + Zip
My Real Phone number

You want get yourself a PO Box and a call forwarding or voicemail service (like Grandcentral.com). And make your registration info like this.

J. Doe (First Initial + Last name)
PO Box 123 (Your real PO Box Info)
NY, NY 11136
1212-111-1111 (Your call forwarding or voicemail #)

That way you could filter who contacts you. If not you might get some crazies calling you at all hours of the night. Or they might just visit your home. Don't laugh, I would call people to buy their domain & their kid pick up the phone. That's not a good thing.

Good idea- come to think of it most of my domains are registerd under me and not my LLC. Think I might change that and then forget about making them private...

Im not sure if it's a good idea or not but right now I'm doing 100% of my registration with 1and1
it's only $6/year and it's free to make it private

damn- here i've been using godaddy and they charge $4 for .coms

is the $6 for .com, or just .info, etc?

Be careful of the privacy that doesn't really do anything. I'm not sure of all the services but with Godaddy, it just adds another step before finding the whois info.

how do you get around it?
is it also possible to go passed 1and1's whois info?

well looks like i'm registering all my domains in my LLC and my PO box instead of me- and forgetting the privacy. I had bought a lot before I had my company registered...
