PPC content network and offer profitability

When it comes to offer profitability and traffic bought through PPC content networks like adsonar, Facebook, Myspace, etc how quickly does it typically take to reach profitability?

I know some offers probably never reach profitability, but have any of you been lucky enough to create a slick enough landing page that breaks even or is profitable from the get go or is profitable after a few days?

Sorry for this lame ass question, but I figured this would be a good place to ask.
 


I'm also interested in knowing whether a campaign can be profitable from the start. I've been running a few offers and nothing seems to really stick.

Constantly losing money sucks...especially when you're starting out. And this pass week, that's mostly what I've done...
 
Well, my (limited, I admit) experience with PPC so far is that the campaign you first design is never profitable. This is because your instincts as to what ads will get people's attention and what keywords are the best are wrong.

Now, maybe the super-affiliates who have been doing this for years have developed better instincts than I, and can now get it right the first time. I can't, though.

So you throw up what you think will work, and use broad matching. Then you get metrics from it. You have to use some kind of data-gathering on redirects -- linking direct to an offer is useless to me because I don't get any information from it. You see what keywords and ads are working and what isn't. Broad matching means you'll find people clicking your ads after searching stuff you never even thought about.

So, can an offer be profitable after 3-4 days? Sure! If on days 1, 2, and 3 you drop all the keywords & ads that aren't performing, and then make new keywords and ads based on what is performing. By day 4 you've gone through 3 rounds of optimization, and you should be breaking even.

On the other hand, if you put up your ads and keywords, then don't change them and wait for the monies to roll in, it'll be just as unprofitable on day 4 as on day 1.

(A disclaimer: I've not done advertising through the specific networks you've mentioned; mine has all been MSN AdCenter and AdSense. But I can't imagine it'd be any different.)
 
Starting out in the Affiliate Marketing game, there are a 1,000+ questions you're gonna have, none of which should be thought of as "lame"... by in large at least :)

The short answer to your question is a resounding YES. That's not to suggest however that even on profitable campaigns constant tweaking and optimizing isn't taking place. Try and pull some value from those campaigns that aren't producing the results you desire, keep a close eye on your statistically meaningful data, and keep positive.
