Just curious what ad position in ppc do you aim for?

I used to aim for 1 to 3, but I have realized that 1 has a lot of junk clicks.

I have also been told that position 2 has a lot of junk clicks as well. Therefore, I am curious what ad positions you guys aim for.

I am not sure if I want to include pos 2 in my pos preference, that's why I am looking for some guidence :D

I messed with adwords a few months ago and never really had a campaign that made me much cash, but the campaign I ran that was the most successful my average placement probably 6-8. It was for mortgage, which is crazy saturated, I wasn't aiming to be placed that low but I was because of my budget. It still made some profit, but not by a big margin.

I have noticed that when I started my most recent adwords campaign, my conversions were much better in the 3-4 position. In the last few weeks my CTR has been stable and getting better and so has my position. Conversions are now cut in half and on most KWs I am at the #1 and #2 spot. My CTR is better now in the higher spots, but less conversions. Time to lower bids.

Sorry for the newbie question, but is there any way to affect in which position your ad shows up?

you can go to campaign settings and enable position preference if you want. You can also just bid to position by watching the position your ad is at based on the bid.

Thanks, this is exactly the type of answer I am looking for.

i aim for whatever position that makes my conversions/click the highest and my cost/conversion the lowest.

in some cases i've seen more clicks AND conversions on the second SERP than the first.

When in the top spot did you notice less conversions overall or less conversions with respect to clicks received?

In other words, you got a ton more clicks in the top spot, but were you still getting the same amount of conversions you were getting in the 3-4 spot?

top spot: 100 clicks / 3 conversions
3-4 spot: 50 clicks / 3 conversions

thanks...

Top right is a nice place to be... cheaper traffic and easily spotted.

On generics top 3 can be too costly, but if it's brand or product model number type keywords, push for the top and alter based on profitability...

Just above the fold is also good, I think people's eyes wander down that way, but some are too lazy to use the scroll bar.

I've found that ROI is best when you're between postions 5 and 9. But you won't get the most traffic. And getting a lot of traffic is key to making big money. To ramp up a campaign that is profitable simply up the bid to get yourself to positions 1-4. ROI will decline but for some campaigns its worth it.

For example, I ran a campaign that had a 400% ROI in position 5-6, but I only made about $200 day. When I increased my bid to position 3, ROI declined to 100%, but even with lower ROI, I was now making $600 per day profit.

Hmm, averaging Position 2 lets say my conversions were "good", I've been rising up because of Quality Score and now that I'm about 1 & 2 Average, my conversions have fallen significantly. I was going a ton of traffic though, I'll drop my bids to position 2 I guess and report back.

I like to test at positions 4-9 which I find have a higher ROI. Once I get a profitable campaign going, to make more money, I try to move to postion 2 or 3 because you'll get a lot more clicks even though ROI will drop.

For example, I ran a profitable campaign at position 5 which gave me about a 400% ROI. But I was only making about $200 per day. To make more money I moved to position 1-2. Although ROI dropped to 100%, I was now making $600 per day profit.
