PHP code to write out sitemap.xml

A guy I met was telling me you can write a php script to generate a dynamic sitemap.xml file for Googles robot. I know a bit of php, not a guru but was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to start this off.

My first question is how would you tell a php file that the xml file is being requested so that you can then generate the xml file.

Let me know if i'm way of track here.

I'm not much of a programmer, and while I understand what it does in theory, I don't really know enough to implement it.
