I really like phpbuilder.com. The best way by far for me to learn was to pick something was beyond my ability and do my best to build it, with the help of google searches.

I find it really difficult to learn by reading a screen and have to use books. I bought Larry Ullman's "PHP and MySQL For Dynamic Web Sites" and it seems really good so far, definitely recommended.

I originally bought PHP for Dummies but the writing style was absolutely terrible - avoid!
