PHP is an open source library that normally runs in conjunction with Apache on UNIX based servers. PHP is paired with a MySQL database engine or a PostgreSQL database, which is FREE.

The most important differences between PHP and ASP are:
• ASP is a proprietary product, and PHP is a free and open source product.

• ASP is platform dependent, and PHP is platform independent.
• Complexity of the code is higher in ASP compared to PHP.
• Microsoft visual studio provides a rich and powerful IDE for ASP development while other parties develop IDEs for PHP.
• Hosting cost is lesser in PHP than ASP

php stands for hypertext preprocessor it is a server site scripting language php is a platform independ .on othe hand, ASP stand for Active Server Pages it is also a server site scripting language
ASP functions through the IIS i.e. Internet Information Services.
