how do you get those gray waves he made in the banner?
 


You can use the pen tool to make lines like that. Then I'd say go to blending options and put a drop shadow. Change colors appropriately and it should work.
 
stan try taking a document with your base color, duplicate the layer, then use the pen tool to make the wave, then make selection, cut, then apply a stroke and a gradient, adjust opacity then repeat... I dont know if that how that was created, but off thats the first thing that came to mind it should work.
 
Make a curvy path with the pen tool, turn into selection (right-click and go to make selection) then do a bit of soft brushing or make a gradient inside of your selection. Erase edges if needed, lower opacity and maybe change the layer mode.

This is in Photoshop mind you :)
