Probably a hurr-durr question, but Googling around didn't help me much...

When using a private proxy, is there a potential security threat to logging in to password protected sites, i.e. affiliate networks, email, bank, etc? If so, would being connected through my VPN and using a private proxy solve the issue?

I believe with a private proxy, dedicated to you only, there isn't that big of risk of your information being taken, because the only person who would be able to trace it if they wanted to is your IP supplier. But in most cases, the affiliate networks finding out that you are using a proxy in general and it isn't cloaked, is where most managers get suspicious about.

Right, but I don't have any good reason to trust my proxy provider other than I'm a customer. The solution seems to be to make sure you're visiting https:// sites when entering personal information. But still not exactly sure if being logged in to my VPN and proxy provides much of an extra layer of protection.

Make sure it's proxying end-to-end https connections. So the solution keep your data secure even from the proxy itself is to use secure connections end to end. For example accessing https://mail.google.com establishes a secure encrypted connection between your computer and the service. Proxies or other types of data interception will not be able to decipher the contents of your communication.

NEVER send your login to your bank, paypal, CC, etc through a proxy. NEVER!
