OMG Castros Done

What's sad is that Bush appears to think that because Fidel is "stepping down" we can expect to see political change in Cuba (drifting away from extreme socialism). Not going to happen...even if you know nothing about Cuba, you can just read / watch the report and see that Raul Castro will more than likely take the presidential position while Fidel still pulls strings. Even if he dies, it's not going to happen overnight.

Edit: I've had a Cuban cigar before. Wasn't really impressed, but then again, I'm not a big cigar aficionado.

His brother, Raul is taking over. It's practically a monarchy over there.

Plus, this isn't really surprising. He turned over much of his authority to Raul in 2006 and for the last 18 months, people have kind of been expecting this.

It is... however... symbolic to a degree. Opens the opportunity for change, but the chances are slim to none.

While many will get their hopes up, I agree that nothing will come of this, although I always hope I'm wrong. elime is correct, Raul is still doing everything his brother wants him to do.

I'm sure Fidel is already deceased

Popular opinion seems to be that he has been incapacitated for a while, and died last nightm causing the strange timing (3am) of the announcement. Smart money says they announce fidel's death within a month.

whatever, is a good moment to announce this, if bush do some move against cuba it will give a lot of votes to Obama

Big deal, its still a fucking bloody dictatorship. While Fidel had all the charisma, his brother was tasked with carrying out the dirty work along with Che, who enjoyed the coup de grace as his favorite part of an execution.

In this day in age there are still political prisoners in Cuba, reporters locked up without trials or charges, its a fucking mess over there and nobody is reporting it.

sure, there are plenty in the guantanamo prison

Those fools locked up there are political prisoners!?!?!. Most were captured while killing or trying to kill US soldiers. If this was the gist behind your post then your out of your mind. I guess though If one of them would have killed one of your family your liberal cool aid drinkin thoughts would be different.

The bright side is, maybe we'll get some of those kick ass cigars! (Legally):rasta:

My thoughts exactly. The US should look at herself and her allies (Saudi Arabia for example, who the US is still arming) before attempting to take the high ground when it comes to human rights abuses in other countries.

Please do some real research before mouthing the media's very tired talking points. Yes, the US has done some shady things in the past, what country hasn't, but compared to the human rights violation that happen day in and day out in Cuba, outside of Guantanamo we're child's play.

Sorry, contrary to popular belief, we're not the evil of the world.

Why is it that thousands of Cubans have died attempting to reach the US? Why would they flee the so-called workers paradise risking their lives in some make-shift raft? And where thousands have perished already?

No matter what you may think of the US, nobody is forcing Fidel and company to rule with an iron fist. That being said I can't negate the fact that the Cuban people are to blame for initially supporting him.

Good riddance to the old bastard!! Now maybe the Cubans can start to unravel that dictatorship and relearn how to live free.

Lazy Hippy, our human rights record is not with out blemish but it sure is a whole lot better than our adversaries!

@ Beerhat and Oogie

Finally a few post from people that think for themselves instead of taking to heart the rehtoric and propaganda of the insane Liberal left.

The liberal left would try to have you believe that we are evil. That the US tortures and kills without need or provocation. We are at war! We were attacked by Muslim extremist and have every right to do whatever is necessary to protect our country.

Lazyhippy..you don't think that Britain (long live Tony Blair) tourtured German prisoners in WW2. Winston Churchill was one of the greatest heroes of Western civilization, yet he tortured if he thought it would save British or allie lives.

Believe you me the allies did more in WW2 than pour a glass of water on someone's face to get them to talk and that's one reason we arn't sitting here on this forum speaking to each other in German.

BTW: Screw our human rights record. As long as we have evil fools out there mutilating and decapitating our citizens and soldiers...I say fuck em!!!

If you count the abuse of the rights of millions of Iraqis then I'm sure the US is up there, but domestically of course the US isn't as bad as many other countries, but your (or rather our, the UK is no better) leaders actively support regimes, such as Saudi Arabia, with a much worse human rights records than Cuba.

Cubans are dying crossing to the states for the same reasons Africans are dying crossing the Mediterranean. I don't doubt that some are genuinely fleeing persecution, but most are simply seeking a better life, economic migration.

Would people see things differently if Cuba was a democracy and Mexico was Communist? Or maybe a useful military dictatorship? Easy to convince the sheeple that human rights abuses there aren't as important as ones in Communist (or lately, Arab) countries.

LOL, Popeye I think we agree.. kinda! Churchill was indeed a cunt - used chemical weapons on the Kurds long before Saddam.

The value of information obtained under torture is more often than not questionable, to big a debate to get into. I'm sure someone will have studied it's effect on the outcome of WW2 and I'm willing to bet that the 10 million dead Russian soldiers played a bigger part.

Would you still say fuck em if it was a friend or member of your family that disappeared?

Churchhill a cunt? He, Blair and Thatcher are the greatest Britains to ever walk on that island. I am not here saying everything the US government does is right or warranted but I have never heard a report of a soccer mom abducted and tortured for terrorist connections. My family and friends do not allign themselves with terrorist or terrorist organizations and will never be picked up by the government for those reasons.

If you are a terrorist or have ties to terrorist organizations or preach out to commit murder against americans then you are an enemy of the state and should be worried about getting picked up, interogated and possibly stripped down and a glass of water poured on your face.
