number of arbi domains

I read somewhere on here that you may have to try a hundred different arbi niche sites before you find some that are profitable. Does that mean you are buying a hundred + different domain names or do people generally use subdomains for this mass quantity arbi stuff? Does it matter one way or the other?

try using subdomains like niche1.domain.com, niche2.domain.com, etc
or directory structure: domain.com/niche1, domain.com/niche2
keep the hundreds of dollars (for hundreds of domains) for ppc.
