Now THIS is thinking outside of the box

It’s not the first time the league has taken a hard-line stance against “guerilla” marketing tactics. Indeed, the NFL fined Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher(notes) $100,000 simply for wearing a hat promoting vitaminwater during the league’s media day prior to Super Bowl XLI. And in another incident, former commissioner Pete Rozelle fined Bears quarterback Jim McMahon $5,000 for wearing a headband with “adidas” on it during a playoff game in 1985. McMahon then famously responded in the NFC Championship game with a headband that read “rozelle.”

So fines went from $5,000 for wearing a headband during an actual game, to $100,000 for wearing a hat, not during a game, but during media day.

Of course salaries went up a lot too, but $100,000 for wearing a hat seems ridiculous.

Short-lived? I don't think so. I think this is the effect they were aiming for. They're going to get publicity. Just look at the article you linked to.

The campaign was set to be unveiled next week and was fairly simple: For every time a player was caught on camera striking the “Captain Morgan” during a regular season game, $10,000 would be donated to Gridiron Greats. For each instance in the playoffs, the donation would elevate to $25,000. And for instances in the Super Bowl, the bounty was slated to hit $100,000 per pose.

I respect them a lot more now.

was referring to the act itself, not the publicity. NFL was pretty quick tosquash this, but yeah, the effect will last a bit longer

brilliant on the part of Captain Morgan

It's funny that this marketing is inflammatory, even though the money the players raise goes to a charity that benefits needy former NFL players.

Wasn't the entire month of October dedicated to Breast Cancer awareness by every team in the NFL with pink shoes, pink striped pants, pink gloves, etc?

I'm all for kicking cancer's ass (and I actually have boobs) but it does seem a wee bit like a double-standard.

The NFL can't make any money on a pose like they can with selling pink jerseys and hats. It is a double standard and pure capitalism.

Whoever thought up this campaign over at Captain Morgans is laughing his ass off... it's got tons of main stream press for the brand and they don't even have to donate any money to charity for it haha

I saw that little move he did after the TD and didn't even think twice about it being the Capt. Morgan thing. I remember thinking that the guy who helped him lift his leg just cost the team 15 yards by being a dumb ass though.
