Any conspiracy theorists care to chime in about why the FUCK google is so FUCKING keen on this instant shit? You have to go into preferences to disable it now, which you have to repeat every single time you clear cookies.

Let me start: they don't like users clearing their cookies, and they know google instant is FUCKING annoying, so they make it harder to disable it making it even more annoying for frequent cookie-clearers, and ultimately this is just one step towards conditioning the masses to just accept cookies.

I don't give a fuck about cookies but the instant thing could literally be a deal breaker for me. I will seriously move to Yandex if Google keeps up their bullshit.

Yandex

It's a Russian SE if I am not mistaken, and I actually think the results are pretty fucking good.

http://scour.com/ is pretty cool too, my buddy made that and then sold it to some company but it has more of a social feel to it...

unsure of why, but it does not seem to be instanting at me. I remember it did earlier though it was pretty annoying

I second switching from Google as my default search engine.

This is one of the stupidest moves they've made, next to making Instant search the default search type. You have to click on the stupid little gear icon to disable Instant search now, which is way out of the way and very unintuitive. The link next to the search box, where you could see it, was better since they're so intent on making you use Instant search.

Instant search is a pain on mobile devices, and this new change makes it even worse. I literally "hate" Google every time I have to search because I'm typing out what I want, see the finished phrase pop up in their suggested items and as I'm clicking on it, the results now change because Instant search just updated the search. Now not only did I just click on the wrong result, I now have to type it all over again. I litterally missed my exit in Atlanta last week because I was trying to grab the address while I was stopped in traffic, then it finally began to move as I was searching and after the 4th time having to search I had missed it without realizing it.

Fuck you Google.

If you have a Google account (you might not have to have one, but don't take my word for it), clickl on that little gear image in the top right corner. Hovering your mouse over it will reveal that it's the options button. Anyway, you can turn off instant from there.

I particularly hate Google Instant. Not only is it annoying, but you have to go through a lot of pages to get back to one you were at earlier. Just disable it.

I also never use search when logged in lol.

Another annoying thing about instant: I often press the "backspace" key to move to a previous page, but in google instant the default focus is the search text box which makes you backspace a character. This "instantly" (see what i did there.. or not) takes you to page one of a fresh new set of results for "whatever phrase you were searching fo" (note the missing "r"?).

And where the fuck did the search bar at the bottom of the page go to?

I turned off javascript a year ago. Instant has never been a problem. Nor have distracting rich media ads.
That's what I try to do too, but a lot of the sites I happen to use, use google api's or something (not familiar with coding or development) and require allowing scripts from "www.google.com" for the site to even show.

Grrr..

I feel your pain. :)

I've gotten really good at turning JS on and off. (One of these days, I'll just code a macro for it.) And I compartmentalize my activities into timeboxes, so I can get away with working long periods without JS.

It's definitely not a perfect solution.

I still have the search bar, I think.

Yandex's bot is the most annoying bot on the interwebs... I've been blocking it from every one of my domains for years.

-I never saw google Instant ever again after I switched to chrome. -Nor ever typed in google.com since then either.

If I were going to switch engines for any reason, I'd be Blekko all the way. Hashtags are the next evolution in search tech... Far better results every time.

Honestly I hated instant when it first came out. I was too lazy to keep turning it off though, and I got used to it. I don't really mind it at this point.
