This got popular recently. 3-7 slides on the homepage in rotation. Gives you a perception of a more fresh, dynamic website I guess. What's the name of this concept?

Every damn wordpress template out there these days has that stupid slide rotation thing. I just don't see the purpose of floating 800px wide images across the main part of your sites real estate, unless it's a photography gallery site maybe.

Well, they don't have to necessarily be images, can be a way to showcase features / important content.

Exactly, most accept HTML content, and can be featured articles, pages, etc. displaying a nice image and summary... call to action buttons, etc. etc.

If you have to rotate things on your main page, then you clearly didn't think your site thru properly. Usually the site owner has an end goal in mind (conversion). A visitor has an end goal in mind as well. The goal of the designer to make those two meet as closely as possible. Nobody visits the page and stares at it for a prolonged time. At least not long enough for the next slide to come in. And if they do, then designer had failed.

Don't waste people's time. Think things thru before implementing them.

actually it is helpful if you want to see various top headlines in a large news site.
you know you can switch slides manually...

Why thank you for presuming what the needs of my or my client's sites are.

Clearly the thousands of sites using the technique have got it all wrong

Apple uses this technique... they're widely regarded as one of the best marketing companies in world. Have they got it wrong?

Apple - iPhone 4 - Video calls, multitasking, HD video, and more

How about Microsoft? Have they got it wrong?

Microsoft Corporation

I'm not even going to bother looking for more as I think I've made it clear that you don't know what you're talking about.

I think if the content in which you're displaying in the carousal is secondary to the content that's shown on page load, it's OK.

A carousal is something you most likely want to stay away from when it concerns your straight up sales page where you have a single goal in mind (conversions), but in general info/content sites, I don't see a problem with it if it's implemented correctly.

In the end though, it's always about testing so you can draw your own conclusions based on your own traffic.

I don't think I've ever agreed with you so much in one post before. You're absolutely right, it entirely depends on the type of site you're building.

Thousands of sites used splash pages and still do. Clearly the number of sites using a technique does not justify it's usefulness.

Apple goes for edginess. This tecnique is edgy. They use it. It works for them.

Could they have done another design and potentially have a better performance? Maybe. We wouldn't know as we can't test it. The thing is iPhone will sell out on day one, whether Apple puts a carousel or a plain text comic sans page up. They are not concerned about conversion online as much.

How about Microsoft? Have they got it wrong?

Microsoft Corporation

I don't see the technique in use. Perhaps I might need Silverlight installed, which I don't have.

That is fine with me. I based all my decisions on performance and split testing. To be honest I've never split tested the carousel feature, but from my personal experience I really doubt it will work on any of the sites I have ever built.

Look at your own stats and see how much time a person spends on your front page, without scrolling past the top of the page. I'd imagine nobody sits there and stares at the header waiting for it to scroll to the next image. People need info. They need it fast. They click thru to the appropriate section as soon as they can find it.

But sure, there is probably a small amount of sites that could utilize this technique successfully. But if you have to ask for the name of the technique, then probably your site is not one of them.

Hurr durr.

Designers trolling designers trolling designers.

I need a fucking smoke right now.

That is all.

Carry on.
