New Design vs Current Design

Im in the process of making a new design for a site of mine, whether it really needs it or not is up in the air, I was bored, I made a new layout anyway...

Im mostly looking for opinions on whether you like the current layout better vs the new one I created.

Suggestions and improvements for both are extremely welcome...

I like the simplicity KISS used on the new layout but I like the smaller header footprint of the current one.

With people on smaller monitors (mostly older people using older computers used by your market, right?), that would take up most of the screen when they load the page.

Just resize your resolution to 800x600 and see if you still like it.
 
Stanley, ill be honest, ive never been great at a design, im more of the programmer/coder type.. .What would you suggest to break up the text and organize it better?
 
the banner + menu on the new design takes up too much space
you can condense it by moving the banner text over the image and thus moving the image a little bit higher

and maybe try changing that first paragraph of text into a list to make it easier to read

just play around with it and track what visitors are doing (analytics + crazyegg)
 
Your current design looks much better than the new design. The horizontal nav on the new design looks absolutely horrible, as does the header text... I would either spend more time on the new, tweaking it to look better, or just stick with the old.
 
I like the simpler look in the second one but the first seems a bit more professional.

Also cut down on the text.
 
Well the consenus seems to be to stick with the old one...

Just makes me realize even more how bad I suck at design... The current layout is a template I got somewhere and the new one was one I made...

It also seems to be apparent from your opinions that the amount of text in the opening paragraph is a bit lengthy... Ill definitely work on that..

I know this is a design post, but can anyone reccomend a better way to have affiliate link be more... Attention grabbing? Currently, the grey rounded box with the offer for a Free home valuation is doing horribly...Should I just go with a banner?
