I am working on developing a niche type classified site. I believe the community is there to use this type of site but I believe I am running into the old "chicken or the egg" scenario.

The question is, how do you get people to be the first one to post when there are no other posts in the "community" of classifieds. Would you be the "first" to post a classified type ad if no one else was there before you?

Any thoughts on how to do this? How to fill the ads so others will come and post theirs?

Check local businesses, email people, ask permission to post... I mean, you don't want to design it to the point where you, personally, are updating and modifying everything - so get an expiration date for each hiring period and give them results. People will not post more jobs on your site if they don't get quality people requesting work from them. Make it easy to post a job. Make it easy to find a job. Filter for quality.

Yeah but my idea is more national, broken down locally. No way I could go into each community and contact local businesses. I like your suggestion, just need to think a little more outside of the box.

I still recommend emailing companies within your niche. You have to start somewhere. There are also often public hiring listings you can post on your site.

I guess, I should clarify. Jobs would be a very minimal aspect of this site. Its more to it than that. Accommodations (rentals, purchase), products (selling your stuff), etc.

Use oodle.com to populate your site with ads.

You get their ads through a web service so it's simple to integrate them into any page template and you maintain complete control of your site. You can still accept and charge for ads then display them along with the ads from oodle.com. Oodle API | Oodle Developer Center

You can also add your site to their network by supplying a data feed so your ads appear on hundreds of additional sites (which can be selling point for your customers). Oodle Classifieds - Send A Listings Feed
