If you had to choose 1, which would you pick and why? I keep seeing a split on opinions on this and just wanted to get a consensus.

Why not buy both. If you can rank 1 and be profitable, you can rank 2 and be profitable as well, and also own the niche :)

I really don't think it matters to the major search engines if your website ends with .net or .org. What matters is the quality of your contents you place on your website and quality backlinks that points to it.

It just depends on the domain and its purpose. I like .orgs for sites that are vaugely "org-y" (hehehehe, heehehehehhe, orgy.) I picked up a .org on which to build a site about a particular kind of addiction. It makes sense in that kind of context.

I pick up .nets only rarely, but not out of any prejudice I have against the domain -- despite years of alternate TLDs out there, and the rise of the domain hack, the general internet using public still "thinks in .com terms" so generally, I avoid .nets that are not keyword matches or otherwise have some kind of tie-in reason (for example, if I'm looking at a site that will be called the [whatever] network, then [whatever].net works well. I also like things that rhyme with "net" for .net domains, but this is by definition a pretty rare occurrence for me.)

.org looks better to me.. not sure why.

I think it's bc it has an "o" in it like com, and just in general looks more "like" .com, than .net does.
Pretty sure i'm the only one to have that random ass thought.

Depends, I like to use .nets if the site is commercial type, but prefer .orgs when the site contains only info. That make more sense to me.
