Need some basic vps advice.

I'm looking to make the move from one of my shared hostings towards a vps server. I only plan on getting a basic vps at the moment to replace the what i'm doing on this specific shared hosting for now.

What i'm getting confused with is unmanaged vs managed. Coming from a shared hosting I'm used to direct admin/ cpanel, if I were to essentially want the same type of setup as most shared hostings provide, would I be looking towards unmanaged or managed? While googling around and checking different hostings I noticed that some do include some sort of cpanel/DA with their unmanaged packages. Would that be enough to get this started based on coming off a shared package or should I be looking into managed vps instead?

Pretty much all i'm looking for is having some sort of DA/cpanel access where i can add domains, use fantastico etc, MySQL, etc. pretty much all the basic stuff.

If I were to go the unmanaged route, what kind of work should I be expecting to do/learn in order to keep the server going for normal use?

Any input on this appreciated :D

Whats your monthly budget? I would go the managed route if you don't know how to configure a server past using a control panel to add a domain. Its nice to be able to just submit a support ticket and have them do an update for you or troubleshoot a problem while you continue to work on what pays your bills. Budget will dictate what people will recommend.

for now i'm looking at some basic vps anything preferably under $20/month would be best. I've looked into the zensix ones available, but was checking out cloud, which seems interesting.

In terms of configuration, I have some experience running servers in the past (long time ago) running servers from home etc. But like you mentioned i think these days I'd rather focus my time and energy on the actual sites and traffic etc. and just be able sumbit a ticket and have issued taken care of.

thanks for such a fast reply!

is photon reputable in this area of hosting? or is this a case of cheap = crap?

any input on cloud hosting?

Just spend at least 50 a month on a VPS, use karl above me he can help you with stuff most managed servers can't.. or use knownhost vs3 (KH2010 will give you 75% off first month, 10% off monthly billing for life.

Thanks for the replies again.

After looking around I went with the Photon hosting suggestion + Direct Admin (hoping to make things easier). I was tempted to go Cloud but I took kblessinggr's suggestion and just skipped it.

Everything is registered and ordered but now I seem to be stuck with a VPS newb issue: how to get things setup...

Below is what I posted on the webhostingtalk forum (just registered there), but I figured I'd repost over here as well since you guys are the reason I went with Photonvps to begin with.

I recently signed up for PhotonVPS and found this forum while searching for some general opinions on them. After I purchased the basic openVZ package I selected the option of having my own domain rather than registering a new one. I did the checkout and everything, got the receipts to me email etc. but now I seem kind of dumbfounded on how to proceed next.

I added direct Admin to my package as I'm totally new to VPS hosting and coming from shared hosting I've had some experience with DA as well as cPanel, so I figured it would help me get things started much more smoothly.

Where I'm stuck now is that I'm not sure how to "connect" a domain I have hosting with godaddy with the photonvps server. I haven't received any emails with any specific ip/urls on how to connect to my server.

The only email I received was the photonvps.com/billing for me to log into to view billing packages, and support tickets/ knowledge database - which seems a bit lacking.

I contacted the support and am waiting on a reply but was also wanting to post here as I'm sure I'll be frequenting this forum in no time.

kblessinggr, thanks for recommending photon even tho I noticed your own link in your sig, I'll be sure to step up any particular hosting needs I might require in the future.

knownhost.

I know the original poster has gone to another VPS source, but I wanted to throw in a good word for knownhost in case this thread comes up in future when someone's searching for hosting reviews.

I had to suddenly move about 125 domains in April of 2008 when the idiot running the hosting company I used (my fault for going with a small company) basically toasted his whole enterprise.

I looked around in a bit of a panic and came across some good reviews for Knownhost (who I'd never heard of before). They moved all 125 domains from the old WHN/cpanel to the new WHM in a couple of hours (probably less).

Their service is as close to fully managed as I'm likely to get for the price. I just put in a support ticket and about 15 minutes later the task (small or large) is done.

They were very helpful about a year ago when a couple of my domains were hit by some scumbag script kiddies (weak passwords, lesson learned) who defaced the sites. They scrubbed the VPS, brought the domains back from a backup, and set up a much tighter firewall that I now manage from within WHM.

I pay $45/month for 1G-RAM, 60GB HDD, and a buttload of bandwidth. A new customer may or may not get that (I asked for a better deal when my annual renewal came up this year). I haven't found anything as good or better, especially for the price.

So, yeah...I likes me some Knownhost!

How long have you been with the company?
