I'm visiting my mother for a few days so naturally, I brought my laptop. On the way out the door, I grabbed my Linksys WRT160N router because she has a (rarely, if ever, used) HP desktop running Vista Home SP1 and no wireless router.

I'm in the "stone age" and still use XP on everything I own.

I've used this router without fail for the past 6 months or so with absolutely NO problems.

I reset it to default standards, hook it up, and Vista (as well as this GODDAMN NORTON BULLSHIT) is doing its absolute fucking BEST to fuck me over at every turn. I can connect with my laptop, but the fucking desktop just won't see shit.

No wonder people think these routers are shit, but they're great with XP. No muss, no fuss. I'm about to throw this desktop through a wall.

It's time like these that I really do consider getting a Mac. But then I remember I'm not gay.

/useless rant

I have a hell of a time connecting to Vista with wireless routers, and my husband has it worse than me. I have an HP, he has a Dell, and they were bought in different countries so there should be NOTHING in common with them, other than this.

Turns out not being able to connect to the internet is pretty common in Vista. If only it wasn't the MOST BASIC THING A COMPUTER SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO.

Nah you're right. I'm using Bootcamp on my delicious Mac and Vista is the worse part of my day.

My wireless and bluetooth shit works fine on the mac...but does it work on Vista? NO

Windows update makes me want to punch babies....why is it always like 200 megs of worthless shit to download every time?

I'd give you some more examples of Vista misery but my blood pressure is already rising.

Glad I'm not the only one that has struggled with it. Seriously, it's pretty embarrassing when you're the family "computer guy" and you're struggling to get a fucking wireless router running.

I got it up and running, though. It was a combination of default settings in Norton and Vista so after 2 hours of "hunt and peck" it's all gravy (for the moment, anyway).

Believe me, that's not permanent.

On Friday the router at my husband's work, which no one EVER touches (I don't think anyone even knows the login to get into the router) magically wouldn't work on Vista for me (and only me) until I changed the settings from WPA2 to WPA.

There's no logic to it, you will be randomly changing settings that don't need and shouldn't be changed forever with a Vista computer trying to connect wirelessly.

My laptop is XP so its no problem there. It was getting the Vista desktop to connect when wired straight to the router that was a PITA.

But you're right about the rest. It makes no sense whatsoever. And Norton was definitely not helping. I don't think they could make their interface more retarded if they tried.

my new laptop came with vista.
First thing I did was to format the drive and install xp. It was a bit of a pain in the ass tracking down all the drivers for xp, but time well spent.
damn hard to find any new laptops with XP installed

I gotta new Laptop last year, gave Vista a try, couldn't get use to it, went back to XP. XP Pro! I should get mac, but been with Winblows for years.

I heard lots about this vista shit creating lots of problems. No wonder none of computer shops here at my place sell Vista. They will be fu**ed if they try to..

Vista changed my WPA key multiple times, for no reason.

Vista refused to let me change from wired to wireless without rebooting 6 times.

Vista refused TO LOAD without changing the way my HDD was read from the BIOS, back and forth from IDE to RAID, even though I have one fucking hard drive and it's connected with an IDE cable (fuck if I know, but XP doesn't do it.)

Vista froze at startup almost every single time.

Vista isn't installed on my machine anymore.

XP for life (or at least until 7 is released).

Vista always worked ok for me. I don't like the redesigned folder layout and UI so much, and constantly having to authorize shit is annoying, but my laptop has worked pretty well.

I don't do much outside of edit text files and use Firefox though.
