Well I have been lurking here long enough that I finally ate the website bug. Alright, here's the plan. I am creating a website based on resume design. Why? Well, I actually am working on my own (as an intern, I don't have much job security) and I wanted to see some items on some of these sites that aren't there. Basically, this will be a static content site. Development of the site has JUST begun. I will NOT be updating it every single day, as I have a job, but as I do update the site, I'll be uploading new iterations of the following document:

http://www.resumebeginner.com/documentation/ResumeDocumentation.doc

It will always be the same link - I don't intend on updating this thread with each update, as that would really double my work... unless I post "updated" in this thread - but I expect to update the site once every 3-4 days, which may make the existence of this thread bothersome.

Objectives:
Making a website
Monetizing it after content implementation
Practicing efficient web building techniques
Clear documentation

The website is ResumeBeginner - Build a Resume, Resume Tips and Tricks, What Recruiters Want to See!

If you see a major change, I will probably have documented it and uploaded the .doc with the change.

Edit: On the same note, I haven't even thought about keywords yet - just getting the design down.

Edit 2: Except keywords on the domain name.

checked the design on your site, it's coming along pretty well actually. my retina aren't sizzling, so that's a good thing.

one important question: how are you planning on monetizing this?

Yeah, I am planning on monetizing it. However, I am going to focus on monetizing it without spending too much money (let's say my budget is around $100 per month). So, in that sense, I plan on posting comments on forums and responding to threads on Yahoo Answers to see if I can get some sort of steady flow of traffic. I'll report the search terms back later (using Google Analytics). The intent is to use PPC (not sure if Google Adsense would be the best to use right now - weighing options). I am really focused on drawing the eye to specific locations of the page. I'll include in my reports whether or not moving the ads to different areas help/hurt the CTR. I have the build it out first, though... which is what I am doing as I am typing this post :)

Let me get this straight...

  • You want to build a site that helps people build resumes.
  • You want to compete against Goliaths that offer the same service, such as Monster, Dice, Careerbuilder, and 4000 other major sites.
  • You want to spend $100 a month on it.
  • You think that anyone with a copy of Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 will abandon the prebuilt templates on those platforms and use your shit?
I know this is the newb forum, but dude, take a step back for a second. What you're trying to do is dumpster dive behind a McDonalds and resell the rotten hamburgers as gourmet sandwiches.

I guess what I'm trying to say is you're not gonna monetize that site quickly, if at all, without some seriously creative strategies aimed at the total losers of the world, which are the only people who would be stupid enough to use it. You're not solving a problem some business or person has, you're simply a low-budget 'example' site.

Your money, your time, none of my business. Just trying to do you a favor and tell you you're 'polishing the brass on the Titanic'.

It's all going down baby.

It sounds like you have more of a chip on your shoulder than useful advice, so I will pretty much lay this out. I understand for you, every website may be one bet-all-lose-all game after another. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or money to constantly update a website and consistently optimize - what does that mean? Well, it means 2 things - the website will be static and it will be SEO-based. Does money roll in instantly? No... it doesn't. In fact, I have the time to wait a fucking year to get some decent traffic. Any sweat off my back? None.

Am I competing against goliaths? Sure, and to split hairs further, let's also say every other website in existence is in competition with some other mega-goliath. I am not sure if you are under the impression that I am trying to chip away at someone's market share, but the idea is to make a content-rich site and see what keywords work and what doesn't work.

Sorry this isn't what you had in mind.

Amen said the church.

Wagoneer, One thing you might learn quickly around here is that the best advice comes from the people who are most analytical. And that response he just gave you was pretty damn good actually. I dont think he had chip on his shoulder but rather raised some good points. Points that Im not sure you addressed even in your response. When you ask for reccomendations, you get them.

I understand he is trying to help in some backwards way, but the only point I got from it was "It has been done - quit." (mission accomplished?)

Even if I did change its direction, there aren't many more options with the domain name (hence my reluctance to change it), and I would rather not spend another $20 on another domain.

That's all you got from him? I got more than that and it wasn't even my question. Which reminds me that maybe its not my business...literally. Ok well Ill leave this thread alone on this note...

Just kind of sit back and think about what your saying because it kinda sounds like "I would rather lose $100 in what doesn't work rather than invest $20 in what does work."

Yes, I am fully aware that he is warning me to not spend my money on it, and I am also aware that I could spend some more money to get something that works. Do I have that kind of motivation at this point? Eh, this thread kind of knocked the wind out of me.

It was a nice refresher course on web-building, though.

So what the fuck is your purpose then? If you want to waste time and money, go buy some porn and spend the night jerking off, you'll make just as much as you will with your dumbass resume site.

Here's a hint stupid fuck: DESIGN THE SITE AROUND AN OFFER.

Don't throw up a generic site with no idea how to monetize.

Some of us spend a few hundred a week on domain names. $20 is shit.

Ever hear of the term: Know when to hold em, know when to FOLD em.

Find a CPA offer, design a site around that AFTER researching the competition/clusterfuck of other advertisors.

Oh I get it now, you just wanted us to tell you how to monetize your dumbass idea. Here little boy, would you like a list of sites/keywords that convert like crazy on a popular offer?

Are you taking crazy pills?

Some people take criticism of an idea as criticism of themselves. You can't help people like that without kissing their ass.
